Cooling system

This radiator has been overhauled. A complete new core has been fitted.

Power Steering convertion

The car came originally without power steering. But parking in the city without it can be very tiring. This and because the PS will reduce the turning angles are the reasons for the conversion.

Extra parts needed:

- Power steering gearbox
- PS pump
- PS pump cage
- PS fluid reservoir
- Crank shaft pully
- various hoses and pipes (high pressure and low pressure)

The steering column needed to be shortened as well.

Preparing the body for paint. Little surface rust spots are ground down to bare metal. Bigger rust spots are being cut out and new panels welded in.

Rear quarter panel right side. Surface rust spots are removed and immediately treated with a rust stopping primer.

The W114/115's were the last Mercedes where the head lights were designed to shine light onto the star emblem on the chrome grill...

The head cloth has been cleaned and painted with a special paint. Mervyn from Prestige Classic Cars has done a fantastic job.

We have decided to remove all the paint to the bare metal except for the roof.

The body is now prepared for primer.

The doors and boot lid are primed with a special protection primer (Sikkens Wash Primer CF)

Here you can see the master at work. Paul is undoubtedly one of the finest spray paint specialist in Ireland.

Paul is applying one of three coats of the next primer (Sikkens High Build Primer)

Now the body is also primed and ready for the coats of paint.

Now the complete body is ready for a few cots of paint.

After a final polish the re-assembly can begin...

1969 Mercedes Benz 230

This blog will follow the partial restoration of a 1969 230 Mercedes Benz by Lichtenberg Classics.
This Mercedes is one of the first W114’s ever built. It belongs to the so called 0.5 Series. The time span of the 0.5 Series lasted only from April 1968 to May 1969.
Specific details to the 0.5 Series were:

Different door card design
Different chrome strip C- Pillar
Different middle console design (small ash tray)
Grill made of aluminium instead of plastic

The 230 is equipped with the very rare 5-speed gearbox, which makes it quite economical.
The engine is a 2.3 litre straight six petrol engine. The car has been imported from South Africa and although it has been used for the last 40 years it represents a good basis for a restoration. The body is still in original condition and will need only minor repair work.

The restoration is carried out to a budget and will include:

- new paint
- interior swap
- overhauled carburettors
- overhauled brakes all around
- new window and door seals
- installation of power steering system

The 230 before the restoration:

I am very happy with the substance (very good for a 0.5 Series!).
The front sill sections need some welding. Other than that it is solid, just some surface rust here and there.
